Classical music has been considered the cornerstone of social distinction. In Bourdieu’s analysis, preferences for classical music works were considered essential part of the culture of the dominant class. Our paper acknowledges the role of classical music in the formation of a legitimate orientation to culture, but understates that this legitimacy is very often a non-realistic description at the level of individuals. The main line of argumentation connects with approaches building argumentatively upon the work on audiences, mainly concertgoers, and makes an original contribution by analysing data on preferences on classical concerts, operas, and ballets. The fragmentation of classical audiences is demonstrated and a typology of four categories is offered, in which minoritarian and more sophisticated inclinations towards musical appreciation are confronted with more common and popular orientations. A rationale behind each type is proposed. Sociodemographic and socioeconomic features are explored, showing the significance of age, occupation and residential area.
